Unfamiliar Territories

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen.  The man who never reads lives only one.” -George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons. By reading we open our imagination to lives other than ours after all we place ourselves in the protagonists' place to understand what they are going through.
Reading has always been one of my favorite pastime, I have always been fascinated by the story told and the theme found.  At all times it seemed an escape from my world to another! it gives one the choice to be whoever they want, whatever destiny they wish. It has often fascinated me how one could escape this wold whenever they wanted by just opening a book, well of course read it as well. I've learned over the years that one can find something different about the same novel every time they read it, I have not yet proved such idea but I hope to be able to make such realization in the months to come. Romance novels were the only books I seemed interested to, from Cinderella to A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks.
Although I have always enjoy reading, I have never really challenged myself outside of school, the lack of time and dedication have often led me to books unread or unfinished. The books read in school have encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone by reading books I would have completely ignored or glanced at disgustingly at the library. I've been taught to read under the lines and at the end, I get a new perspective of the novel and understand its meaning. It somehow amazes me how the strategies used at school can be used in any book no matter the style.
Through this blog I hope to share my reading experience with the ones who share the same passion as me when it comes to reading. I hope to inspire them to get out of their comfort zone and make new experiences by allowing themselves to enter unfamiliar territories.

  1. I really enjoyed how personal you were in the post! It gave me a sense of what kind of reader and writer you are based on the post. The only negative thing I have to say is that it is very wordy. Trying to get into reading in the beginning of the blog was very difficult because I could not get an immediate idea of what you were trying to say. I would suggest in your next blog not trying to use so many words. When I was reading this all I could think about was the article, How to say nothing in five hundred words. I really struggle with being too wordy sometimes and I feel as if it takes away from the clarity of what one is trying to say. I loved how you used a quote to start off because it caught my attention. However, I feel as if you should bring it full circle and explain it more throughout your post or even just mention it at the end. By not mentioning it again you leave the reader questioning how it directly tied in.

  2. I really like your blog and this post. It gives me a sense of nostalgia and I found it very deep (I don't know). It was very cute too how you included your childhood love for romance novels. This is personal yet not. I like how your perspective on reading is in this and how you hope to improve the skills of critical reading in the future. Maybe emphasize more about how you never really liked reading until recently. What changed your motives? kinda thing. Also why did you decide to choose that quote and not another? Is there a reason behind it? I just want some more elaboration on things, but overall I think you met the criteria of the assignment while also adding small hints about you as a person.

  3. I really like your post and the blog is aesthetically appealing! It has a great neutral tone to it and it makes it inviting and warm. I loved the personal aspects you talked about and how you related almost everything to yourself. However, the overall post needs some light work. What changed your mindset to liking literature again? Someone? Something? I really enjoyed the beginning quote, but why did you choose it? What was the reason behind it and how does it make you feel? If these questions were answered in the post, the blog would have been exceeding the requirements.

  4. I really like your post and the appearance of the blog brings a sense of warmth. Reading your post made me see how passionate you are about reading, and how it is also an escape for you. The quotations at the beginning added a hint of sophistication to the post. You have also shown me the journey you've had with books from mostly reading romance novels to broadening your experience with books that have been assigned to you and actually enjoying it. I feel that a lot of people can connect with your post including me. I also want to point out that your sentences jumped from one topic to another, next time you should put some sort of transition at the beginning of each sentence. I look forward to reading your blog.
